Every time I sent off medical teams from Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine over the past two months,I was moved to tears and choked with anxieties for their safety. I have since followed WeChat Moments, showing concern for my comrades-in-arms who areassisting Hubei in the combat against 2019-nCov, and putting their own lives atrisk to do so. They are fearless, heroic and stirring, qualities seen in the heroes of Chinese history who chose not to with draw in the face of death and the soldiers in the poems of the Tang Dynasty who were determined not to return until the enemy in the borderlands was defeated. On WeChat Moments, I saw Dr.Zha Qiongfang’s diary, beginning with her departure for Wuhan on Chinese NewYear’s Eve and ending with her landing in Shanghai on March 31. She didn’t miss a day during this period. Her words are simple and plain, but her feelings are genuine and sincere. They made me moved to tears.Dr.Zha Qiongfang was a member of the first medical team dispatched from Shanghai,and the only female doctor on the team sent from Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. On Chinese New Year’s Eve, she left her home for Jinyintan Hospital. The team left for Wuhan with the least mental preparation one can imagine. They had the least amount of working experience. They had to make do with the most inadequate supply of medical protective equipment. They had to work in the most imperfect protective conditions. But they were a group of warriors treating the patients in the most critical conditions. They worked in Wuhan for the longest period of time among all the medical teams that were sent to assist. They arrived at Wuhan Tianhe Airport at 1:30 a.m. on January 25. When they concluded their work in Jinyintan Hospital’s ICU on March 31, they had worked there for 68 days.In Dr. Zha’s diary, I saw numerous people around her, including doctors, nurses,patients, patients’ family members, couriers, volunteer drivers, volunteers who helped with cleaning in the ICU, and chefs from hotels and restaurants, among others. They were ordinary, but also great. It is not a grand narrative. It is nothing but a simple narrative of ordinary people’s daily life and day-to-day work. When it is pieced together, it reveals the entire picture of how China combated 2019-nCov, beginning with the doctors and nurses who had to work 50 hours a week with heavy protective suits, until more medical teams arrived in Wuhan, allowing them to work in shifts on a regular basis. In the early days,medical protective supplies were in short supply, so that only those working in the ICU could get one N95 mask, though after adequate supplies arrived, they could get as many N95 masks as they needed. In the earliest stages of the outbreak, ICUs were filled to capacity every day, and gradually more and more patients in severe or critical condition became patients with mild symptoms,who then were discharged from the hospital after they recovered. In the early days, three female doctors encouraged each other on the night shift, helping one another to give their patients accurate treatment after discussions of difficult and complicated cases. Under the leadership of the CPC Central Committee and with the participation of all the people, China got the pandemic under control within three months, a miracle in the history of human epidemic prevention.Dr.Zha’s diary has been reproduced by many mass media outlets across the country,including CCTV and Xinhua News Agency. The confidence and power it conveys is like a flag flying high over the battlefield, moving and inspiring numerous doctors and nurses to assist Hubei. Many of Dr. Zha’s students asked for battle assignments on their own initiative. Renji Hospital established its third medical team of 156 members within 24 hours.Now,all the doctors and nurses dispatched from Shanghai to assist Hubei Province,including Dr. Zha Qiongfang, have returned safe and sound. As time goes by, the pains experienced in that period may go away and the memories may recede, but the little things recorded in the diary will stay for ever. They will never fail to refresh our memory. There are also many people and things not mentioned in the diary that deserve to be remembered. We should always remember the doctors and nurses in Hubei rushing fearlessly to the frontline against the epidemic at the beginning of the outbreak, the doctors and nurses busily guarding against the epidemic in the rear day and night, and the police and community workers standing in the forefront of the battle, working hard everyday. We must always remember the flight attendants, truck drivers, bus drivers,volunteer drivers, couriers, and the like who did not abandon their posts.“History is the best text book and it is the best dose of sobriety.”Dr. Zha’s Diary of Fighting COVID-19is not only a historical record of the combat against COVID-19, but also a rare text on medical humanities education. It reproduces the sense of duty, the goodness, and the courage that the whole country, including doctors and nurses, displayed in the face of a disaster anddanger under the leadership of the CPC. It gathers and builds up the immense Chinese power with this selfless, fearless spirit.
